Just a little advice
Don't be fooled by the title. I for one am flabbergasted in the most positive way. But the locals don't seem to be as excited about their own city as much as I am. Nor do the other Ausländer seem to be jumping up and down when walking around this historic glorious city.
I have the most amazing view of the somewhat sad but interesting memorial - the monument for all the European jewish Holocaust victims. 60 years after the end of WWII it was inaugurated and has been standing ever since to remind people of a horrible time that should never come again. I walked over to the monument, taking tiny steps in complete silence. Yet the whole atmosphere was ruined by tourists of all ages jumping on the slabs, back and forth and eating and drinking on them. I walked away. To me the slabs all look like graves (the shape), so it seemed like all the people were jumping and dancing on graves of the fallen jews. Das geht aber nicht!
I finally got the right atmosphere yesterday around 2 in the morning coming back from a go-walking-and-suddenly-get-lost tour around Berlin. I continued to walk along the memorial until I found the perfect spot to enter - right between the highest slabs which was also the darkest place in the whole area... And then it hit me - the idea that the architect had when coming up with the monument. Feeling as scared, confused and lost as the Holocaust victims felt. And honestly speaking - I was terrified to the point that all I wanted to do was run out and see some people, some buildings, some light at the end of the tunnel of the high slabs. And I did. But the point remains that even though I got to run out, the victims could not and that is, in my opinion, what people should keep in mind when they go see the memorial place for European Holocaust victims. Hopefully the message will reach the right people.
Other than that I continue to be amazed by the grandeur of this historic city that I have come to and it is an understatement to say that this city is growing on me very fast.
