Living and Studying at GLS Campus | Viver e Estudar no Campus da GLS
My name is Inês, I come from Portugal and I have been studying German for the last three weeks at GLS German Language School in Berlin. I have told you about my first day at school, but now that I have been here for some time, I have to tell you more about life on campus and all the practical aspects related. Who knows, maybe you are also thinking about studying at GLS?! Here you can learn more about how it is really like.
O meu nome é Inês, sou portuguesa e estou em Berlim há três semanas para estudar alemãp na escola de línguas GLS – German Language School. Já vos falei sobre o meu primeiro dia na escola, mas agora que já cá estou há mais algum tempo é altura de falar um pouco mais sobre a vida no campus da GLS e sobre todos os aspetos práticos relacionados. Quem sabe, talvez também considerem a hipótese de vir estudar na GLS? Aqui podem conhecer mais pormenores sobre toda esta experiência.
This is GLS German Language School in Berlin. Maybe you cannot tell from this picture of the entrance, but the school has actually a campus with several buildings that include classrooms and auditoriums, besides a cafeteria, restaurant (“Die Schule”, you can see the terrace on the photo), event locations, and even a hotel (almost ready – it will actually include a swimming pool in a historical building that was once a bath house).
Esta é a escola de línguas GLS – German Language School – em Berlim. Talvez não dê para perceber nesta foto da entrada, mas a escola tem na verdade um campus com vários edifícios que incluem salas de aulas e auditórios, para além de uma cafeteria, um restaurante (restaurante “Die Schule”, cuja esplanada aparece também na imagem), espaços para eventos, e até mesmo um hotel (quase pronto – o hotel irá igualmente incluir uma piscina num edifício histórico, onde existiam antigamente uns banhos públicos).

When I first contacted GLS I didn’t realize that it actually has a really complete campus. But after coming here I have to say it is one of the great things about this school: classes, accommodation, dining and social activities can all be combined in one place. Not that we don’t want to see and enjoy Berlin, but it is actually so practical to have everything together in one place and to have staff that is available to help you with anything.
Quando eu contactei a GLS não percebi logo que a escola tinha realmente um campus tão completo. Mas depois de chegar aqui, devo dizer que essa é uma das melhores coisas nesta escola: aulas, alojamento, refeições e atividades sociais podem todas ser combinadas num único espaço. Claro que todos queremos também ver e aproveitar Berlim, mas é mesmo prático ter tudo o que precisamos junto no mesmo local, para além de staff que está disponível para nos ajudar em tudo.
At the book shop (above), you can buy all types of books and stationery, but you can also borrow some books and grammars, like in a library. Here you can sign up for the activities that GLS organizes: seminars, guided tours of the city or of its monuments, and one-day activities or trips to other cities.
Na livraria (acima), podemos comprar todo o tipo de livros e artigos de papelaria, mas podemos também requisitar alguns livros e gramáticas, como numa biblioteca. Aqui podemos igualmente inscrevermo-nos nas atividades que a GLS organiza: seminários, visitas guiadas pela cidade ou a certos monumentos e atividades ou viagens de um dia até outras cidades.
The cafeteria is another important place: to have your meals, and to meet people. I have to say that the selection of food is pretty good and you can also enjoy your meals in the terrace, which is great if, like me, you like to stay in the sun!
A cafeteria é outro local importante: para tomar as refeições e encontrar e conhecer pessoas. Devo dizer que a seleção de comida é bastante boa e pode-se também comer na esplanada, o que é ótimo se, como eu, gostarem de estar ao sol!
If you prefer going to a proper restaurant you can choose “Die Schule” instead. In the same building, right next to the reception door you have a restaurant, open to the general public, with a varied menu, and also a nice terrace. It is here that the famous “Stammtisch” takes place every Monday, from 19pm to 22.30pm. The Stammtisch is an opportunity for you to meet people, socialize and practice your language skills over a glass, and thus it is one of the favorite activities of GLS students.
Se preferirem ir a um verdadeiro restaurante, podem antes escolher o “Die Schule”. No mesmo edifício, logo ao lado da porta da receção, fica este restaurante, aberto ao público em geral, com um menu variado e também com uma esplanada bem simpática. É aqui que tem lugar a famosa “Stammtisch”, todas as segundas-feiras, das 19.00 às 22.30. A Stammtisch é uma oportunidade para conhecer pessoas, socializar e praticar os nossos conhecimentos linguísticos enquanto tomamos um copo e, por isso, é uma das atividades favoritas dos estudantes da GLS.
But of course life does not happen all inside the campus. There are plenty of things to do in Berlin, and you will want to visit, go shopping and eat outside the campus too. Prenzlauer Berg, the neighbourhood where GLS is located, caters for all of your needs. It has a huge deal of shops, restaurants and bars and not just any – it has the trendiest shops and restaurants and bars in the whole of Berlin! It also has a lot of history and some sites you can visit. Besides, GLS is located 200 meters away from Mauerpark, where the famous market and open air karaoke takes place every Sunday!
Mas claro que a vida não acontece só dentro do campus. Existem imensas coisas para fazer em Berlim e vão querer visitar a cidade, ir às compras e comer fora do campus claro. Prenzlauer Berg, o bairro em que a GLS está localizada, oferece tudo o que possamos precisar. Tem uma grande quantidade de lojas, restaurantes e bares, que são só os mais na moda de toda a cidade! Também tem muita história e alguns locais de interesse que podem visitar. Além disso, a GLS fica a 200 metros do Mauerpark, onde se realizam todos os domingos o famoso mercado e o animado karaoke ao ar livre!
Right in front of GLS you also have a Tram station – Schwedter Str. Trams M1 and M12 will take you directly right into the center of Berlin, so you can also visit all the main sites.
Mesmo à frente da GLS encontra-se uma estação de Tram - Schwedter Str. Os Tram M1 e M12 levam-nos diretamente ao centro de Berlim, o que nos permite visitar todos os locais principais da cidade
